Koni

Koni adjustable shocks.

I had these fitted on by a company called Elite in Rainham, Essex. The shocks cost £360 and fitting was an extra £147. They took sometime to fit - about 4 1/2 hours or so. My first impressions are good - the ride is fairly smooth and the cornering has improved greatly. The car is much sharper in the bends and is very precise. My old shocks had done about 40-45k miles, so the improvement was very noticeable!

Adjusting the shocks

"The shocks are adjustable in 2 ways - the stiffness can be altered and the car can be lowered by about an inch or so. The stiffness can be altered to 3 different setting, City Ride, Cross Country and GT (as they call them). K&N (Supplied by Scimitar Int.)

"The K&N sounds great with the roof down and I can definitely notice a difference in acceleration!"

"The K&N gives a little more power and a bit more of a growl"

"Nice howl from this, and also improves markedly the throttle response. It could do with an improvement to the heatshielding that K&N provide".

One snag of the K&N is that if you fit the cold air induction pipe you lose normal use of your bonnet stay -Ed

Various, mainly Demon Tweeks

Rob decided to devlope his own cold induction air kit, here's his story:

"The kit cost about £75 by using two items bought from Demon Tweeks - £20 for a brake duct used as the air intact scoop (part number: 3627-BLK) £40 for two metres of 63mm Samco high-temperature silicone piping (part number: SFD-063) The rest of the cost was for two jubilee clips, VAT and delivery. (These prices will probably have changed by now) To fit it, you also need a front grill as this is what the brake duct fits to"

"As the brake duct acts in a similar manner to the Jackson Racing kit, I would imagine that the performance increase would be much the same. Approximately 10bhp - depending on speed. The car is much more responsive to my right foot and I get hardly any acceleration lag."

Rover !

Bob decided to add a bit more bhp by fitting a 3.5 litre V8 rover engine and modifying some engine components! He has documented this mod very well on his own web site, click here to read all about it !

Here's some of Bob's comments on his mod:

"So far, excellent. Handling appears to be exemplary. I seem to get just over 20mpg. The standard rover V8 is about 150 bhp. With my cam, carb & exhaust I have 220bhp. The rover block can be bored and stroked to 5.2 litres (latest range rover) and over 350bhp."

"The V8 is very smooth & pulls reasonably from under 1000 revs so it’s easy to potter. When you want to hurtle 2nd catapults you to 70 odd & if you want 3rd does it again up to 100! You get the wonderful TVR noise (only a V8 can sound like this). At 4k+ revs it snarls in a most agreeable way. A pukka gearbox will improve things vastly, the T5 box is notchy but precise & feels good with a very short lever."

"I haven’t driven a standard MX5 so I can’t really compare it for agility, I’m impressed by how solid and unflappable it feels. I’ve had a go in the TVR Griffith 500 & that is such a frightening machine; by comparison this is easy to drive & altogether a pussycat (nowhere near as fast mind)"

If Bob were to do this mod again he says he would actually go for a larger engine !

" To get 200+ bhp out of the 3.5litre it ends up quite peaky, a 4.3 with a more or less standard cam would give the same power but you wouldn’t have to gun it as much so it would be more responsive in real life situations & probably use less juice. The chassis copes easily with a 100% power hike & asks for more (apart from the front brakes that is)."

Bob's Beast !

Looks like a normal Eunos? It does until you get under the bonnet !

Sebring

Sebring Supercharger

My car currently produces well over 200 BHP. The car now pulls very strongly across the range, overtaking is as easy in fifth and it was in third. Also fitted with J&S knock sensor and monitor to avoid detonation. Also fitted with smaller Race Pulley to increase boost over standard kit.
